Andy McDonald MP with his son Rory before he diedAn MP who lost his own son to epilepsy has called it an “utter scandal” that parents still do not have access to medical cannabis to treat their children’s condition.

Shadow transport secretary Andy McDonald said he was “absolutely determined that no parent would have to run that risk” and they should be able to explore the use of this drug now it has been made legal.

The Middlesbrough MP’s 16-year-old son Rory died after an epileptic seizure in 2006, and his 24-year-old son Freddie also suffers from the condition and needs 24-hour care.

Speaking about parents having to pay up to £2,500 a month to buy cannabis oil abroad, he said: “I’ve no idea they are carrying this burden, they have enough on their shoulders and there is a solution we know that works, and they should be given that opportunity.”
